Here’s why you need to be in Montevideo with Hacker Paradise, Feb 2020

You want sunsets? We got sunsets.

Hacker Paradise’s destination for February is Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo! This city has miles of gorgeous coastline, perfect to enjoy the sunset from. And while days become shorter for many of us in the northern hemisphere at this time of year, Montevideo’s location, as the southernmost South American capital city, affords plenty of daytime to finish up conference calls before heading out to enjoy the picturesque views along the sun-soaked coastline.

Uruguay is a beautiful, chill, and largely undiscovered by western tourists. It carries a history that is both unique and inspiring. For instance, it has the longest national anthem, topping out at over 5 minutes! At the same time, it also has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. Plus, Uruguay was the first country to provide every kid with a laptop and wifi. Those are two stats to be super proud of.

An adorable quirk of this second-smallest South American country is that every single house has it’s own unique name! This makes it a bit harder for mail delivery but a fun, easy conversation starter with the locals, many of whom have custom signs outside their homes displaying their house names.

Make Leap Day 2020 Count

The quirky charm of this country might be perfectly encapsulated by the fact that the 29th of every month is Gnocchi Day, a nod to the large Italian influence on the country. And what makes spending February in Montevideo all the more special is that it’s a leap year! Expect gnocchi up to the eyeballs.

Montevideo has long disputed Buenos Aires’ claim to be the birthplace of Tango. We’ve checked the records and there isn’t really a clear cut winner. However, Tango is without a doubt the most popular dance in both cities. Because of that, there is no shortage of tango lessons or shows in Montevideo.

Weekend trips to write home about

Speaking of Argentina’s capital city of Buenos Aires, it’s just across the river, accessible for a weekend trip with a quick 3-hour ferry ride. Other popular weekend trips from Montevideo? Iguazu Falls, one of the new natural wonders of the world, is a flight away and a popular choice. So is a day in the Uruguayan wine country, a short drive away in Montevideo’s backyard. In fact, Uruguay is one of South America’s top wine producers.
